FAQ's For Workshops/Webinars/Online Community

What kind of workshops do you offer?

In the most succinct terms, I teach people to document the stories of their families from newborns to elders using photography, video, audio, books, and hand-made items. The goal is to mix digital media with tangible media that will tell your unique story.

When will these workshops be available?

Soon! Summer 2021 is the target for the first set of workshops.

What will the online community be like?

It is my dream to create an online community where individuals can take my method, document their family stories, share them, and get inspired. This is a feel good place where we can celebrate family and our history. All good vibes!

Does being part of the online community cost me anything?

Nope. You don't even have to  participate in a workshop.  Just come and see what everyone is making.

FAQ's for Family Portrait, Video, and Storytelling Sessions

How would you define your style?

I have a very unique style in that I use photography and video to tell the stories of my clients. I prefer natural light and honest moments. Every family is different, so a portrait and/or video session will unfold a little differently for everyone, but my goal is document your family in all their uniqueness. I have a very comfortable and loose shooting style, nothing too posey posey, and just enough direction to get an honest smile out of you. At times, it may even feel conversational. This is be design. Often times, those moments when you let your guard down end up being the most beautiful images I capture from the whole session.

What should I plan for?

Here is my advice to prepare yourself for a photo and/or video session

  • Dress like yourself, but add just a little more pizzazz. The photos should be a really  great indication of who you are in real life.
  • Don't worry about everyone matching. I think the best family photos look like I caught you hanging out on the best of your life. The more matchy-matchy everyone is, the more the photo will feel staged, in my opinion.
  • Super white shirts and black fleece don't always photograph well.
  • For women, I do suggest ivory and cream tones. I don't know why, but it makes women's skin look flawless.
  • You will know better than anyone what colors look good and don't look good on you. Have the family work in a "color family" so they coordinate, but again, don't worry about everyone wearing the same color.
  • If it's warm and you have babies and toddlers, bring the shoes, but be prepared for most of the images to be of them in their bare feet. Baby and toddler toes are way cuter than shoes.
  • Right before the shoot, do a serious teeth and nose check, especially on the kiddos.
  • In my effort to get as natural of images as possible, I start with the most important images you want, and work my backwards. If a child is having a moment and not cooperating, I can change my plan on a dime. Crying kids make for horrible family photos, so I try to give them space and acclimate themselves to me so that I can get great photos of them. In the 17 years I have been shooting family portraits, I have only had two sessions that we had to reschedule because a child didn't want to cooperate. It's all about flexibility.

How do you take payments?

I take cash, check, credit card, Venmo, Cash  App, and Applepay. I will take PayPal in a pinch, but I am moving away from their services.

FAQ's for Oral History Sessions

How should I prepare?

I find that oral history sessions are the most successful if I come to your location and conduct the interview from the comfort of your home. We will choose a time that is convenient for you and determine a location in your home that has reasonable light. Usually, the dining room table is the easiest location. I come from the belief that photos and mementos  are the best triggers of memories, so collect your photos and objects (especially the oldest ones you have, even if they are from family members long passed) and be prepared to talk about them. I will start an oral history session from your birth, but if a photo gets you off track, don't worry. I LOVE unstructured oral histories because memories are not analog, and I will get the best stories from you if you feel free to move around.

If you have stories about your elders that are passed, please be prepared to speak about them too. Oftentimes, some of us are the last keepers of the stories of our elders. These oral history sessions are vitally important to document those stories.

How long does it take?

It takes me about 10 minutes to setup. The oral history interview itself can take anywhere from an hour to an hour and half, and then another ten minutes for me to disassemble. Depending on the length of your interview, and the amount of supplemental photos and videos you include, it can take me anywhere from 3 weeks to 5 weeks to finish your oral history film.

There is an additional fee to expedite films.

How will I receive my final film?

Your final films will come to you both through an online link and on a thumb drive.

FAQ's for Business Solutions

What kind of businesses do you work with?

I work with businesses as small as a sole proprietor, to nonprofit organizations, to schools, to NGO's, to large corporations.

Can I build a custom package that includes photo and video?

Yes! And better yet, when you do you will save $$. Just let me know what you are interested in and I can tailor a package to your needs.

What kind of turn around am I looking at?

Photos edits can vary from a few days to a up to two weeks, depending on the project. Video projects can be delivered in as early as 3 weeks but can take upwards of 6 weeks, again, depending on the project.

Morning cuddles over coffee? Baking cookies with Dad? Bedtime routines from pajama'd feet, to brushed teeth, to books in bed. These are the things daily rituals that nostalgia is made of. Let me document the beautiful and unique way your family goes about their day (in a condensed shoot of 2 hours). The resulting film is between 4-6 minutes and will make your heart ache with love. This is a truly special way to document a family's history while getting everyone's rendition of the story. This touching family documentary method will result in plenty of laughs and often a few tears remembering those that have passed. This is great for extended groups. The resulting film is between 12-17 minutes in length.
